Daisy smiled at him. “Do you think Cole and Jake would like to join us?”

  What? Daisy thinking of others?

  “Why don’t you ask him?”

Daisy went over to Tank’s brother, who had settled on the floor in the corner of the room with Jake next to him.

“Would you like to join us for a walk?’

Cole looked at his new companion and back at Daisy. “Yes. That would be nice.”

He stood, and Jake wagged his tail enthusiastically. The four of them left.

Scott thanked the lieutenant colonel and said he’d be in touch. The officer nodded at me and departed.

Scott addressed Anthony. “The meeting went well. I’ll call you tomorrow, and we’ll begin to put together a plan.”

“Okay. I’m going to the hot tub and see if any of the homeless are there.”

“Wait,” I said. “We have leftover brownies.”

I hurried to the kitchen and returned with the box.

“They’ll love these,” Anthony said. “I’ll definitely score some points.”

Anthony left with the treats, and Scott and I went to the kitchen.

“Why don’t I run to the market and put together one of our deli dinners?” he suggested.

I smiled at him. “I’d like that. I’ll set the table.”

We didn’t discuss food choices. Scott had done fine the times we’d done this before. I watched his tall figure through the back window as he walked down the driveway.

Movement outside caught my eye. Tommy and Fred were in the front yard of their cottage having what looked like a jumping contest to see who could go straight up in the air the highest.

Daniel’s Volkswagen bus arrived, and he and Allie got out. I remembered they’d mentioned something about extended family Sundays and invited me to join them. Dinner together. Movies and games. Tonight dinner was with Scott, but I looked forward to Sundays with the others.

Ken and Sue Ellen were rebuilding their lives.

I was ready to create my new one.
